Setting: It’s a world pretty much like our own, except that it’s inhabited by demons alongside humans. There are actually two worlds; Asshai, the world of mortals and humans, and Gehenna, the world of demons and essentially Hell. Demons can’t enter Asshai in their normal forms; the only way to do so is to possess objects, materials, or living things in Asshai. Demons are invisible to the vast majority of people; only people who have received a temptaint, an injury or illness caused by a demon, are able to see them.

“Demons” is really a blanket term, as it covers everything from Christian demons to demons from Buddhist religious mythos to Japanese yokai and Western fairies. Demons can possess pretty much everything, but what they do possess determines their classification and alignment. There are Eight Demon Kings, and each King rules over a certain sect of demons—Rot, Insects, Fire, Water, Earth and others. Not all have been introduced yet. The kin of these Kings falls similarly into one of these sects or elements, and have appearances and abilities related to their element. For instance, the lowest class of demons is called Coal Tar and appears as tiny little floating soot balls; they possess fungi and appear in dank places and belong to the Rot aspect. Ghouls are demons that possess corpses and are also of the Rot aspect. Greenmen are garden-dwellers and belong to the Earth sect, along with the mischief-causing Goblins, and so on and so forth.

Lording over Gehenna as the ruler of that world and the leader of the Kings of Gehenna is, of course, Satan, the world’s ultimate big bad. Satan’s goal, apparently, is to claim Asshai for himself, but he is much too powerful to possess anything in the entire realm. Only one body has proven powerful enough to hold him, and even then that body broke down in a matter of minutes. Sixteen years ago, Satan tried to enter Asshai in an event that became known as the “Blue Night.” On that night, hundreds of the most prominent religious figures around the world were temporarily possessed by Satan and killed with blue flames.

Presumably, around the same time that the Blue Night occurred, twin boys were born to a human woman. The circumstances around their birth are unknown, but what is known is that the mother, Yuri Egin, died, likely in childbirth. The twin boys, it turned out, were the human-born sons of Satan. Rin was the first born, and he inherited all of Satan’s powers, including the ability to produce blue flames—Satan’s calling card. The younger, Yukio, apparently inherited none of that power. Worried about what Satan’s sons running around in Asshai would mean, their birth was kept a secret and Rin’s demonic powers were sealed inside a sword known as Komaken. Both boys were adopted by the Exorcist Shiro Fujimoto, who raised both in his monastery to be human. Rin was completely unaware of any of this throughout his life, but Yukio grew up able to see demons. In secret, he began training to become an Exorcist when he was eleven in order to protect his brother.

When both boys were fifteen, however, everything changed. The seal on the Komaken wore down, meaning that it could no longer contain Satan’s power. Rin started to see demons, and realizing that he had awakened, demons began to target him. Father Fujimoto gave him the Komaken and told him never to draw the sword, as drawing it would turn him into a demon completely. At that moment, however, Satan was finally able to possess the one body in the world that could withstand him—Shiro Fujimoto’s. Using Fujimoto’s body, Satan almost managed to drag Rin into Gehenna with him through a Gehenna Gate, but Rin unsheathed the sword and destroyed the Gate. Fujimoto killed himself to protect his adopted son. Now a demon, and with the Exorcist world aware of Rin’s status as Satan’s son, Rin swore to defeat Satan. But that would require becoming an Exorcist first.

Not all demons are evil, but enough of them are and they cause enough trouble that the realm of Asshai required some kind of force to oppose them. That force happens to be the True Cross Order, an international organization of Exorcists. They are controlled by the Vatican, but have branch offices all over the world. Like demons, Exorcists have a similar class-based system whereby Exorcists fight demons using different styles and traits. When an Exorcist reaches the rank of Meister, which is the second-highest ranking, they enter into one of these classes. The classes are Tamers, Knights, Dragoons, Doctors and Arias. Tamers summon and command demons to do their bidding. Knights fight against demons with swords, many of which are holy or magical. Dragoons fight with guns and use special bullets, such as bullets filled with holy water or made of blessed metal. Doctors have the ability to heal wounds inflicted by demons and some of them can also use barriers. And finally, Arias use Bible verses, sutras and other recitations to defeat demons. Every demon has a “killing verse,” which is a phrase that will destroy a demon when spoken. Each class of Exorcist relies on each other, and Exorcists never fight alone. The highest ranking for an Exorcist is that of Paladin, and only one Exorcist is ever made Paladin. The lowest rankings are Pages, which are essentially students, and Exwires, which are like apprentices. Rin Okumura and his friends are currently Exwires.

In order to train new Exorcists, True Cross requires schools. It’s unknown whether there are other schools in other parts of the world, but in Japan the Exorcism school is True Cross Academy, an enormous city-sized school. For the most part, normal human students attend the school and learn normal things like math and such. Exorcists-in-training, however, attend the cram school in a separate wing, where they learn all that is necessary to become an Exorcist. The school is run by Mephisto Pheles, who goes by Johann Faust in public. Mephisto is a demon himself and likely a King of Gehenna, though it’s unknown what his intentions are or which King he is.

Rin, his Exwire friends and Yukio have all fought many demons together over the few months that Rin has been at the cram school. Recently his friends have become aware of the fact that he is Satan’s son, and though it took them all awhile to accept that fact, things are only just now starting to go back to normal. What’s more, Rin is finally starting to be able to control his demonic powers.

Personality: Rin Okumura is, first and foremost, a shounen hero. He’s cocky, sure of himself, reckless, quick to anger, earnest and kind of stupid. At least that’s Rin on the surface. Underneath all that, he’s quite a bit more complex.

Rin has always been rather reckless and cocky, with a pathetically short temper, probably due to his demon heritage. He has always been a problem kid, constantly getting into fights, unable to hold down a part-time job and always doing poorly in school. Even when he was very young people would accuse him of being a “demon’s child,” though none of them ever knew how right they were. This was due to his bad attitude and short temper. He was also never able to keep his strength in check and would go all out on anyone who crossed him, despite the fact that he could easily put people in the hospital.

These days he’s mellowed a little, but that rebellious, reckless kid is still in there. He’s still rather quick to anger, but doesn’t get into fights quite as quickly anymore. He still rushes into things, despite constant prompting by his friends not to do everything alone. He respects people, but has a hard time following orders and playing by the rules.

Everything changed for him on the night that his adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto, was killed by Satan. The even turned his world upside-down, and was a turning point in his personal development in many ways. Not only did he lose his father and realize his true parentage, but he also abandoned his own humanity and realized what his short temper and recklessness could do. The reason why Satan was able to possess Father Fujimoto was because Rin told Fujimoto that he no longer considered him to be a father. This shook Fujimoto’s core and gave Satan a way in. Rin is haunted by the guilt surrounding this. He doesn’t directly blame himself for Fujimoto’s death, but he does blame himself for what he said, for the fact that Fujimoto died to protect him, and for the fact that he never got to apologize or say a proper goodbye.

This was the start of his determination, not just to become an Exorcist and kick Satan’s ass, but also to become stronger, self-reliant and to become a man that his father would be proud of. This is what drives him to keep moving forward against all odds, to work hard despite hating hard work, and to protect the people around him despite him never really having friends before. He has always cared about people, especially the innocent and those who can’t stand up for themselves. It isn’t until attending True Cross Academy and meeting young Exorcists that he first starts actually relating to people, although he’s still not all that good at it. He still has a rather quick temper and tends to resolve disputes by fighting and arguing. He also is terrible about reading people or reading situations. He is, however, very empathetic, able to find common ground with people and relate to their feelings and goals. For the first time in his life he has friends, and he loves them. His empathy and good-naturedness extends toward animals and even some demons as well. He is always willing to make peace, if peace can be made. In this sense he can be an idealist at times.

Rin is very earnest and honest as well. He hates lying, especially to his newfound friends, and this is part of the reason he finally reveals his true nature to them. He would do whatever it took to protect the people he cares about, even if they hate him for it. Rin is the type to grin and bear it when he’s hurt or upset. He has been scorned his entire life; he may be used to it, but that doesn’t mean he likes it or that it doesn’t hurt him. He knows that the moment someone finds out what he is, whether they’re a friend or not, it’s highly likely that they will mistrust, fear or outright hate him. He accepts this, and will even accept attacks against his person, so long as people don’t threaten his brother or his friends. When it’s over he’ll make light of the situation and smile and be back to his normal carefree self, but inside all the scorn and hatred bothers him. He can usually brush it aside if it’s someone he doesn’t know that well, but if it’s a friend it’s that much harder to bear. It doesn’t help that he has confidence issues when it comes to his powers. He knows there’s always a chance he can go out of control, and he’s terrified of hurting someone that way. This is why he works so hard at every task put before him, even when he wants to quit. He wants to prove to himself and to everyone else that he’s not just Satan’s son; that he can control himself and become a great Exorcist. More than anything, he wants to protect the people closest to him, and he never wants to have someone die for him again.

This unfortunately leads back into his recklessness. He hates being protected and hates feeling useless. Since he is the son of Satan and the target of every demon in the world, he often attracts all kinds of trouble to him. He hates dragging people into what he considers to be his own problems, so he will often run off on his own to deal with it. This earns him the anger and frustration of his friends, and especially Yukio. He has a hard time letting people help or protect him, though he has gotten better at it lately. It’s only his carefree and generally happy nature that prevents his burdens from crushing him. And he is generally a very happy person, easily amused and able to not take things too seriously. He takes genuine delight in seeing new things or in seeing another person’s skill at something, even if it’s relatively simple. He likes making people happy and can sometimes be an impromptu mediator, urging people to make peace and chill out. With friends and family he usually prefers to cheerfully calm them down when there’s an issue, only arguing if the issue gets further pressed. All of this is especially true with Yukio.

His relationship with his brother is a complex one, although from Rin’s point of view it’s simple. Yukio is his younger brother, which means that as the older brother Rin is supposed to not just protect him, but also tease him relentlessly. Superficially they have a pretty typical brotherly hate/love for each other, but beneath that Rin is genuinely proud of Yukio and sees him as something of a friendly rival. He knows that Yukio is better than him at pretty much everything, and lately he has come to appreciate what a truly powerful and talented Exorcist he is. He wants Yukio to be the best he can be, but conversely he also wants to surpass him and become a better Exorcist. He also knows that it’s his job to help Yukio relax and have fun at times.

As for Tu Shanshu, Rin will be amazed and confused to learn that there’s another world out there, one no one told him about. He will likely be convinced that Tu Shanshu is between Asshai and Gehenna, and that his arrival and entrapment there is just some kind of training or obstacle to overcome. He will love the hell out of the city and want to explore every inch of the turtle, and will also want to meet everyone, kedan included. However, he will also constantly be on the lookout for his friends or for a way back home. He has training to finish and a goal to accomplish after all, and no turtle is going to keep him away from that for long, in his opinion.

All in all, Rin is a cheerful, reckless teenager with a lot of pretty typical teenager traits. He’s reckless and irresponsible, but he wants to learn, and readily admits to his own mistakes. He takes advice and does everything he can to become better. On the surface he is completely carefree, while underneath that he can take charge and be responsible when it’s needed.

Appearance: At first glance Rin could pass for a normal Japanese teenager (as far as anime goes, anyway). He has blue-black hair that is short but rather messy and is always getting in his eyes, which are dark blue. He’s somewhat short and dresses casually when he’s not wearing his True Cross Academy uniform. However, he does have some things that mark him as not-quite-human. His ears are pointed and his canine teeth are basically fangs. These are somewhat unnoticeable, but he also has a black tail that ends in a tuft of fur; this he keeps hidden under his shirt. However, when he unsheathes the Komaken and releases his demon form, all of his teeth sharpen, his ears get longer and pointier, and blue flames crop up all over his body. The pupils of his eyes also turn red, and when he really lets himself go his irises form an almost swirling shape, something that also happens when Satan is possessing someone. He also tends to let his tail out when he’s like this.

Abilities: When in his normal human/demon form, his primary abilities are super strength, agility and very fast regeneration, even from very dire wounds. He’s strong enough to carry ridiculous weight unaided and can lift cars like it’s nothing. With the Komaken still sheathed, he can still access some of Satan’s powers, mostly just his blue flames. With the Komaken sheathed his flames are smaller and not as strong, but he has a modicum of control over them. Recently he has learned to control the flames, though it’s not down to an exact science yet.

When he does unsheathe the Komaken, he has full access to Satan’s power, which gives him more flames to use, more strength and more agility. He can leap ridiculous heights and shake off blows that would obliterate a human. In this form he once held his own against a King of Gehenna, and another time he coated an entire mountain in blue flames that burned only what he told them to burn.

There are several downsides to this, however. In this form, while he is beginning to have control over his powers, he isn’t quite there yet. He has a tendency to let rage and anger get the better of him, and when this happens the flames consume him and he becomes little more than a feral monster, destroying everything in his path. All of this also means that his power is completely cut off if the Komaken is taken from him and re-sheathed. Using his powers like this also wears him out a great deal, to the point that he sometimes passes out afterward. His tail is also a weakness in this form, as a demon’s tail is one of their weakest points.

On a more normal note, he has a great skill for cooking and loves to cook his own food. His cooking is said to be very delicious.

Inventory: His clothes, the barrette Bon gave him to hold his hair back, and the Komaken.

Suite: Fire, and one floor is fine. Fire due to the fact that Rin's kind of dumb and went "fire? well I guess that sounds appropriate..." Since, you know. Demon.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person: He had to remind himself sometimes that it was a good thing he was an idiot. Sure, he was an idiot, and he knew it. Thank God, too, otherwise he didn’t think he’d ever have made it this far. He would have started questioning himself somewhere along the line and given up. He’d probably have let the Exorcists kill him on the day of the old man’s funeral.

He had never felt lower than he had those moments in Mephisto’s Strongest Prison before Shiemi came to rescue him. Shiemi, who always derided herself and believed herself weak. Rin didn’t think he’d ever met a girl as strong as she was before. There he was, scared and with no confidence, questioning why he was alive at all. Questioning whether he even should be. The old man must have been rolling in his grave. He’d died to save Rin, and Rin had thanked him by falling so low as to question that sacrifice.

But now here he was, Rin Okumura, still an idiot, but at least—maybe a wiser idiot? He could control his flames, and he wasn’t scared anymore. Not of himself, not of Satan’s power, not of what he might do. He was closer to surpassing his brother, closer to defeating Satan. He was in control. He had never felt more confident.

He hoped that, somewhere, the old man was proud.

Network: Oi, so this place is pretty amazing, huh? It’s a giant turtle, how cool is that! Actually, when they first pulled me out of the water I kinda thought I was, uhhh, some place way different than this, heh. The people here are really nice too, right? They just totally gave me my own place to stay, and it’s got all these rich things and free food and a computer and everything! Man, I just said “I’ll go to Fire” without even thinking, and it turned out to be totally sweeeet!

Anyway, though, now that I’m all situated and stuff, I figured I should find out where everyone is. Cause Yukio and Shiemi must be here too, right, I mean I was just with them! Oi, Shiemi! Oi, four-eyes! If you guys are seeing this you’d better answer and let me know you’re both alright! Hey, and if Bon and Shima and Konekomaru and Izumo and Shura are here too, you guys can’t leave me hanging either!
